Another concept album from Cunninlynguists with stunning album art? I must smoke to thi- oh wait I did.
Story time!
You know how when speakers are only half plugged in, the sound that comes out seems stripped of the essential layers of musicality that make it a listenable song? Well that happened to the Count and I when we decided to put this album on, and my God was that first track terrifying. The next day I ran the song through some effects on Audacity and came up with a pretty accurate version of what we were listening to. Basically, we found ourselves listening to this for what felt like hours. Yeah, we thought it was just static at first too, but when we couldn't fix it we were resigned to believe that what we were hearing was exactly what the fellas at QN5 wanted us to hear.
So I tried to rationalise it.
It's an album about fucking dreams, from the guys that brought us this gem - of course they knew what we'd (heh) do before listening to the album. They put this track in to trip us all the fuck out! But after about the fifth bout of the creepy chanting chorus fading in and out of the track (and my consciousness following suit), we had a sneaking suspicion that something was up. Then, by sheer accident or act of divine will, the Count kicked the speakers, somehow accomplishing what we had failed to do intentionally - fix the damn speakers. All the layers of music we'd been missing out on rushed into fruition in time to hear that first beautiful drop of the 'Darkness' vocal sample in the second track.
The rest of the night consisted of two simple actions: sitting and listening.
